In September 2021, I approached my group of veteran RPG players with an idea: a Star Wars campaign designed to encompass the entirety of the Expanded Universe Timeline from A New Hope to Crucible. This idea had been attempted once before, but back then our games were still handled in-person and subject to schedule mishaps. After having to adapt to conference calling and video chats due to Covid, my players were ready to indulge their DM and his crazy dreams of long-term campaigns.
But how do we have epic moments for individuals within a timeline already rife with such heroes? Where could we put these pillars of hope and courage, allowing them to see, meet, and speak with established characters but still be the ones in the spotlight? When do their stories slide into the Expanded Universe and then off to the sides to handle their own arcs?
Answer: the Sidewinder Stories.
Starting from 2BBY, players have made their impacts throughout the Galaxy, witnessing events awe-inspiring and horrifying. Moments of epic proportions have been seen, seized, and passed by. How far will a character make it through the Timeline before the struggles of their circumstances, the consequences of their choices, or even simple age and weariness take them from the Sidewinder and place them in the Histories of Campaign Canon?
As the campaign grew (and grew and grew), players have come in, dropped out, or asked to help me develop the setting and make it our own, and it’s still going. With so much going into the project, it’s become a fan-fiction collaboration, with artwork and additional stories popping up as ideas arise.
