R2-M3, nicknamed “Irons” by the Hunter’s Mark crew, was an R2-series astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton on Nubia. His manufacturing date places him as being built in 20BBY, but evidence of tampering with the datalink has caused suspicion concerning this fact. Described by his comrades as ‘acerbically helpful’, Irons always preferred being in the thick of whichever situation was happening at the time. Equipped with the standard array of astromech tools, he was ever-seeking for a different (in his words, ‘lazier’) method or answer. Even with the deprecations from acquaintances or himself, Irons proved to be brave, considerate, and reliable over the years.
Originally sold to a surveying crew, Irons found himself without a master for several weeks when the survey team was arrested by the Galactic Empire for selling proprietary information to private buyers, one of which was a Xexto freight-handler named Olto Gabin. As Irons was assigned to the ship, not the crew, he was left aboard the impounded ship with a restraining bolt keeping him in standby mode.
After the Sidewinder had completed repairs and was space-worthy again, Olto sent a team of shipjackers to the impound lot to see if any could be stolen and sold for needed funds. The survey ship was among the first stolen during that raid, and Irons was discovered during the hyperspace flight. Reactivated, the beings on the team explained to the astromech what happened to his former crew and offered him a new job on Olto’s ship.
Irons accepted the offer and upon arriving, he was promptly assigned to members of Olto’s “Field Group” to help them on a rather dangerous mission. Since that time, Irons moved on to work most often with Will’po and Mardek aboard their Bounty Hunting ship, Hunter’s Mark.
