07/06/2023 Rolling Storm

My senses of hearing and smell have grown weaker over the years, due to injury and exposure. My body has compensated by developing a strong sensitivity to pressure change and direction.

So while I’m out on the walking route, having read that the rain wouldn’t be due until the evening, you can expect my sudden confusion when I feel the pressure around me drop a little and I immediately look south.

Ho’boy

That don’t bode well for the mailman. Time to see if I can still outrun a storm.

07/05/2023 Forgotten Day Off! Plus, a cat!

I woke up this morning in a mild panic. It was twenty minutes before my clock-in time and my son was asking me Mariokart questions while I blearily opened my eyes.

I was halfway through getting my uniform on before I remembered: it’s my day off!

This is what happens when you work back-to-back 11 or 12 hour shifts for weeks at a time. So, I’m back in civilian clothes and lining up my morning chores before I can sit down for writing. Apparently, I also need to do some site maintenance. One of my players messaged me about not being able to open the most recent Sidewinder chapter.

Of course, if there’s one problem, there’s bound to be another, hidden and waiting for me to move on to the next project before rearing up to mock me. With the Dungeon Crawl about to pick up steam (eyeing the players who haven’t checked in with their schedules), I’ll be wanting to change up the RPG tab at the top of the site.

In case I get lost in house-spousing and forget to update here: Penelope stole the dog bed and you should ‘awww’ at her.

She has her own pillow, though…

07/04/2023 Federal Holiday, Writing Plans, and Compensating Photo (cw: spider)

It’s the Fourth of July. If you live in the United States of America, this is going to be a very loud, very flashy, and (depending on your scale of nationalism vs patriotism) a day to think while everyone is celebrating.

I will, most likely, write up an essay to give my own thoughts on today. For now, it’s a Federal Holiday so I can actually relax (sort of)! I also get tomorrow off as it’s my non-scheduled day! A 2-day weekend! Those are exceedingly rare for me.

I’ll be whittling away at the writing and handling chores. To compensate for not diving into anything of substance in this posting, I present a photo of a tiny spider (warning for arachnophobes):

Lookatem! He’s adorable!

Saw this little guy while I was out delivering, and while he was tiny, he was fierce! Put up his two front legs in a full threat display, turning away to sulk as I smiled instead of running away in fear.

Don’t worry, little guy. You’re terrifying. I believe in you.

Stay safe out there, readers. Essays will be out soon!

06/23/2023 Birthday Boy Aftermath

Ben has reached his 5th birthday, and was duly spoiled for the entire day. He crashed into his bed at the end of the evening.

But he decided to get up and, like the Swifts before him, found the safest place to lay down and go back to sleep.

This is how I woke up. I remember Dad waking up to find me like this when I was about Ben’s age.

Snapped the photo and sent it to Dad, who responded ‘if Papa could have, he would have taken a picture of me sleeping like that at that age, too.’

Nice to see that the adorable things are genetic.

06/22/2023 Enchanted Redneck Roads

Living in Louisiana can have its moments of beauty coupled with snapshots of confusion.

The 5yr has to stay with the grandparents while I’m at work, but the main road to their house is currently out thanks to a broken-down bridge, so I have to take an alternative route.

Sometimes, the route is simply gorgeous.

This being rural Louisiana, however, there’s always the chance of seeing something that will make you pause.

…I have so many questions…

06/17/2023 Wife Made an AI photo

I remember when these were first starting out. While I will always prefer actual artwork from a living person (keeping an eye out for an artist for some sketches) I admit that this is just fun.

I get I’m writing a story about an autocracy, but this is ridiculous.

I’ll see to uploading more throughout the day. It’s another 16 miles walking.

Stay safe out there, readers.
