09/18 Late Night Re-writes and sleepy Old Man Casey

I’ve always had a personal rule when it comes to any world-building or campaign-writing: if the players add something to my world and it fits, I need to respect their creative drive and add it to my campaign.

Now, with the current campaign being a Star Wars campaign set in the Expanded Universe timeline, I’m beginning to understand the pressure the authors of those novels must have felt when they were adding to the universe.

Last year, one of my players gave me some details to their character that I thought would add depth to the character, honor the players’ creative perspective, and enrich the Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, I also forgot to write the bloody details down, so when they gave me new details based on what they had said beforehand, I was understandably (from my biased perspective) confused. I went back through my notes and, to my horror, realized I had been moving from a point with background details that would not be in following with my rules on player contributions.

To Lina: I apologize. I didn’t write the damn thing down.

With that, I’ve spent the evening going through my background notes and adding the details necessary. Old Man Casey is, also understandably, sleepy from my late-night work.

Hard working dog right there, folks.

Now that that has been fixed, I can continue with my writing, or rather since it’s nearly midnight and I’m driving the kids to school in the morning, probably should go get what sleep I can.

I swear, I need to include a section for GameMaster Essays so I can explain what notes I have.

Stay safe out there, readers. Hopefully I’ll have Mardek’s Side-Arc ready for posting in a couple days, and the next Adventure posted shortly thereafter.

09/17 Back Home and Game Night

We’ve made it back home from our trip to Dallas!

The dogs were understandably angry with us. Not only were we gone, but we put them up with people who gave them haircuts.

“I’m going to pee on everything.” -Indy

There’s a reason why I have the rule of “get everything on the floor put away” when we come home after a long trip. Not ten minutes after getting home, the corgi was peeing on any bag I hadn’t gotten to yet.

“I’m not getting 5 feet away from you for two days.” -Korra

The Goldens are old enough to understand that sometimes we leave, but the youngest of the pack, Korra, still doesn’t like it if we’re gone for more than a day.

Now that we’re all settled back at home, it’s time I prepared for the Main Arc session tonight! So much to do, such little time.

Stay safe out there, readers. I’ll write about how they did sometime tomorrow.

09/14 Early Morning Downtime and Yesterday’s Annoyed Animals

Sarah and I are sitting in the predawn, waiting for a business to open for 6AM, after being told that we needed to be here for 5:30AM or there’d be dire consequences.

I gotta admit, it’s a great tactic to get people to check in early. But that could’ve been another 20-30 minutes of sleep, if I was lucky.

While we’re waiting, I can let y’all know just how angry some of the other animals at the Swift Ranch were yesterday.

Daisy is angry, but she’s also old, so she has reason.

Ever woke up an old hamster to clean their litter? They really don’t like this and will make their opinions known, via grunting and nipping. At least, Daisy grunted.

And two of the cats were around while we were going about our travel-prep work. The third was nearby but she wasn’t feeling the camera at the moment and darted off into the woods for her rambling rounds.

Apollo: cute but derpy.

Apollo turned out to enjoy being an outdoor cat, but occasionally he comes inside to sit on the desk and swat at my hands while I attempt to write. He fancies himself an editor.

Y’all, pray for Penelope. She’s all right, just very dumb.

Ever seen a cat headbutt the water bowl over and over until they knock it over? Then meow at you until you put out more water, so they can repeat the process? That’s Penelope. When she was a kitten, she had to be kept separate from the others for medication, so we set up a water feeder for her. Apparently she took to it way too well. She also gets annoyed if she doesn’t have the carrier we brought her home in set up for her to sit in during the day.

Time to start the morning. Stay safe out there, readers.

09/12 Monday’s Day Off and the Mountain of Chores

A Monday morning broke over our little rural home and something was different about it.

Namely, that I wasn’t scrambling to get my postal gear together. It’s a day off. A week off, actually. I’m off from the day job all week until next Monday, as we prepare for a trip out of town and catch up on all the other chores/projects that have been needing attention. The kids were all kinds of confused to see me in civilian clothes while they were readying for school, but even they were glad I was off work for a little while. “You work too much, Dad,” Han said during the drive to school. “You can get some sleep!” Ben said as I helped him out of the car.

Sleepy small town not happy about the workweek starting.

I wish I could, son. But just because Dad isn’t in his postal uniform doesn’t mean he is free of responsibility, be it self-imposed or house-spouse necessary. I’ll be writing some today, namely getting Votosh’s article finished with editing and posting, but also Mardek’s Side-Arc before Arc 1, Adventure 2 gets my full attention. As one of my players said during the sit-down discussion on Saturday: “No pressure on getting everything up, but I wanna read it!”

I’m not feeling pressured, don’t worry. That they are anxious to read the story is very encouraging. But before I can, I need to get the house in order. Sunday was spent on the backyard (wonderfully destroyed by overly excited dogs who love digging) and vehicle repairs (I am all kinds of an amateur with automotive mechanics but I can do some work), so it’s down the priority list I go.

At least I’ll have company while I wander around the house and property, as Old Man Casey refuses to leave my side when I’m home.

“That’s enough typing, please give pets.” -Old Man Casey

He’ll find the moving of topsoil entertaining, at least. So long as he doesn’t try digging through the bags.

I’m off to house-spouse and eventually write. Lots to do today and I can’t procrastinate. Stay safe out there, readers.

08/22 Late Sunday’s Updates, and Missing the Deadline by 10 minutes

I was so close.

I told myself this morning, after getting the kids ready to go visit with their grandparents, that I would get a Side-Arc finished by the end of the day. All I had for the Side-Arc was half a page of notes, but I had the story fixed in my mind and knew where I wanted it to go. I wanted to have it finished for Sunday’s posting, knowing I had also planned to have a characters’ wiki article posted.

The article was finished in about an hour, and then I went to work at crafting a Side-Arc short story. All day, every moment I could find, I typed away. I made it to less than 2 paragraphs to go and it was 11:40PM.

Then sleep came up and slapped me upside the head. I woke up at 12:15AM.

That’s … incredibly frustrating.

But it is written, and I have it posted, as well as the Wiki Article from this morning.

I’ll set it up properly in the Timeline, and then I’m going to get to bed. I expect my supervisors will be highly annoyed with me for managing to get the weekend with them unable to say otherwise, so Monday’s going to be … fun.

Good night and stay safe, readers. I’ll see you in the morning at sunrise.

PS~ The Old Men were also asleep in the room, and I just had to get a quick picture of them.

You’re welcome.

08/20 Saturday’s Day Off, Han’s Dragon, and Tonight’s Session! (And Dogs!)

I haven’t seen a scheduled Saturday off since…checks notes…June? Maybe May?

I’ve had to put in leave for a Saturday here or there, but those were extremely busy Saturdays that needed me around. Today is a free day, as in I can finally tackle the list of things I’ve been needing to do for the last few weeks.

So of course, I’ll be handling those chores, being the present father, and attempting to write, all at the same time! I never said I was exactly sane.

The 6yr saw a brief introduction to the world of RPG storytelling and writing earlier this morning, as she peered at the various books and notepaper on my desk. “Dad, what’s all this?” she asked. She knows that the dice are meant for something I do when I have my headset on, and she knows I tell stories, but hasn’t made the connections yet.

“You know that book you got from the Book Fair?” I asked, pointing at the ‘Making a Creature Encounter’. “The Dungeons & Dragons book that talks about monsters for storytelling?” She nodded.

“I have several of those books,” I said, “but sometimes I can’t find a monster I want the heroes to fight. So,” I gestured at all the papers, “I make them myself.”

Her eyes were wide with astonishment. “You can make a monster for your story?”

“When I need to,” I said. She looked at the pictures in the open books. “Are you making a dragon?”

I nodded. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to use it in my stories soon,” I said, “but I want one to be in the story in case the heroes come across it.” She was disappointed when she realized that making a monster was mostly math, but she was intrigued by the kind of monster I was thinking of. I told her she’ll be ready to start playing in about a year, if she can get a better grasp of rules and quick-math. She’s frighteningly smart already; just gets too excited and stops thinking, sometimes.

The Main Arc Session is tonight! The players have been asking good questions and planning things out. With this session, we’ll be beginning the Arc Finale.

Looks at Sidewinder Story pages…really need to get on that. I’ll need to reset my writing list and set my priorities.

While I’ll be plunking away at the keyboard, I have these two lummoxes to keep me company.

Jojo, on the right, lost a lot of weight during the summer, just as we finally got Casey back to a healthy-looking size. So, we’ll be cutting down on Casey’s feeding (only 2X the normal amount instead of 3) and tripling Joe’s food amounts. I’d say I was worried, but as I also stay outside most of the day (and lost nearly 40 pounds or 18 kilos since April) I’m in the same boat as the Old Man.

Happy Saturday, readers!

Last Nights’ Moon, Han’s Sleep Pattern Problems, and Writing Fixes

It was 1:30AM last night. I was between segments of my biphasic sleep pattern and preparing breakfast and lunch for the day-job, when who would toddle into the kitchen but my 6yr-old daughter.

“Heya, kid,” I said. “What brings you out here at this hour?” Were it a school night, she would’ve been sent scurrying back to bed, but it’s the weekend, so I don’t need to be strict.
“I woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep,” she said, peering at the pan full of food. “Why are you cooking?”
I explained to the 6yr that sometimes, Dad wakes up and has to wait until he’s tired enough to go back to bed. In the meantime, there’s chores to do. “Sorry, kid, but you get it honest. I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember. It’s rare when I sleep through the night.”
The 6yr stayed up for about an hour, asking questions while I went about the meal-prepping, cooking, storing, and cleanup. She asked for ways to get her to go back to sleep and was told to go read a book, since that has helped me in the past. She tried that and was passed out on the couch shortly after.

A Swift tradition, that.

Of course, I always have company during my “can’t go back to sleep” time. There are other gremlins that like to stare at me while I do my late-night cooking, just waiting for me to be clumsy.

After seeing to the sleeping gremlin-princess (she forgot a pillow and blanket but she did grab her portable night-light, bless her) I went about my own routine to get myself ready for bed. Dawn would be soon, and I wanted to be rested for the day shift. I did manage to get a decent picture of the night sky, with the full (or gibbous, I’m never sure) moon making its way across.

It was just when I felt like I could go back to bed when I realized something about the chapter I had been working on. I have been struggling to get it finished for the past week, but it had never come across as what I was looking for. I usually refer to my notes taken during the session when this occurs, but I couldn’t find the outline or session recording to factcheck myself (and this is precisely why I record the sessions, with the players consent, of course) so for a moment there, I was worried that I would have to do a complete rewrite.

When lo and behold, the recording had been accidentally downloaded into a different set of files, those meant for this sites’ wiki-styled articles! The outline was there! As excited as I was to be able to make headway, I told myself I could wait until the next evening or Sunday.

We have a session tonight! The Field Group has a terrific challenge ahead of them, and they’re going about it smartly, RPing their hyperspace journey as their strategy discussions. I’m looking forward to what they come up with.

Lunch break is done, so back to the mail I go. Stay safe, readers!

He’s happy I’m home; he’s just old

This is five minutes after I’ve come back home from a long shift. He’s always stupidly happy when I come through the door, but once the formalities are out of the way, old man just wants his rug and for me to not leave my seat so he can justify staying there.

In a few minutes, the kids will be abed and I’ll be writing, so he’ll get his wish. But for now, there’s the chaos of parenting to behold!

Panicked Sunday posts, plus Korra!

It’s 5 minutes to midnight where I’m standing, and I’m just now remembering that I was trying to keep up with daily posts!

I’ve made it a week only to forget in the chaos that is my Sunday!

So, expect an update to this fairly soon, but for those stepping in to be disappointed by a short post, I present Korra!

She’s about one step away from slamming her front paws into me at this moment.

Updates soon, readers!
