01/19/2025 A Busy Week meets Forced Time Off

The past week has been frustrating in assigning priorities, but now that I’ve been ‘forced’ to stay home for a few days, I’ll be able to hold myself to my daily goals!

The week was full of myself saying that before I could sit down at the desk and write, I needed to make progress in my house project: handling the bigger cleaning chores before Sarah came back from her trip. Between that and minding the gremlins we had created, it’d be near 9 or 10 PM before I could make it to the keyboard.

Responsibilities are not fun, but it’ll be satisfying when Sarah comes home to clothes folded and put away, floors cleaned, and (if I’m lucky) the kids’ rooms not looking like tornados had come in for visits.

Another reason I’m trying so hard to make it into remote work as a cybersecurity analyst: I like house-spousing.

What else had happened during the week? Plenty!

Han discovered my learning how to bake and helped me figure out two recipes: shortbread cookies and hand pies.

Apparently, hand pies are meat pies but large enough to function as full meals. Got it from a Hobbit cookbook.

The next four days look like I’ll be staying at the house while Louisiana handles an artic blast that the residents are nowhere near prepared for, so with luck I’ll be able to sit down and write or study. Or we’ll have the power knocked out; one or the other.

Y’all stay safe in the weather.

1/02/2025 Kicking off Resolutions!

1: Keep up with daily blog posts, even if it’s just a check-in.
2: Daily word goals for SWRPG novel and personal novel.
3: Keep self at low-key energy and not allow stress to control the day.

I wish I could hold myself to a loftier new year resolution, folks, but after all these years, I’ve learned the wisdom surrounding the concept of resolutions: they’re not for big and life-changing struggles.

In the past, I would’ve said “I’ll get my book published this year!” and would genuinely strive to accomplish that goal. I’d also suffer burnout and depression at the fact that the story I wanted to publish was getting away from me, because I was focused on ‘finishing’ the story, not ‘writing’ it.

This time, I just want to write those stories. If they are finished before the year is out and I can get them published, I’ll figure out what to do. Until then, I just want to enjoy the story that’s in my head. I have other, more stressful things to handle in the coming months, so adding such a lofty goal seems…counterproductive.

The daily blog post goal is doable, I know. I’ve done it before; I just kept losing my way on maintaining it. This time around, I’ll work to actively make a posting, even if it’s like it’s stated above and I’m just checking in.

Kind of like today, where I will show off an accomplishment: I made bread!

My first baking attempt that didn’t ruin the dish.

05/13/2024 Late Night Distractions

My Mother’s Day for Sunday is still in Drafts; I’ll post it soon.

I would say that I’m going to dedicate my evening to writing, but I’m afraid I’m distracted.

I know only one serving: aerial view required

There was a $10 sirloin on sale for $3 and it needed to be eaten today. This will knock me unconscious after a while.

Stay safe out there, folks!

Trying new habits and new tools

For all my progressive and liberal tendencies, I am very much a creature of habit and I’m reluctant to try new approaches to old techniques.

I’m also terrible with tech. It took several years of explaining to my elders that I have no idea why their computer wasn’t working and was more comfortable with the electronics of their generation. I tried learning how to code a few times; the results were amusing and infuriating.

But if it’s at a level I can understand, I will eventually try. It’s when I can figure out how to incorporate the new approach with my old understanding that I get excited.

Such as bento box breakfasts and scannable notebooks!

Look at the cool new things!

My wife got me both of these, and it’s taken a while to learn their usefulness. But, once I got over the hurdle that is “Swift is afraid of personal change”, they’ve turned out to be some of the coolest things I’ve received in a long time. (Sarah is a smart woman; she knows to give me a practical challenge that’ll result in me making my life a little easier in order for me to be happy with gifts.)

Learning how to cook for a bento box is a unique challenge for a US Southerner. Portion control is a strange concept and I can’t help but cook enough to feed 5 people even if it’s just me eating. But it turns out that one of my personal recipes (tuna with fried egg…just trust me, it works) is also a bento box recipe with rice and soy sauce. I can work with that.

The learning process is slow and I am reluctant to change, but if I can figure it out for myself, I’m all for it.

With that, the morning break is over and it’s back to the mail. Hopefully I’ll be awake long enough this evening to work on some of these pages, or at least start on an essay. Happy reading, folks!

I finally didn’t ruin a fish recipe!

Behold! A salmon dish cooked by yours truly, and it isn’t a worthless dish!

I cannot stress enough how terrible I’ve been with learning fish recipes. It’s something I’ve always wanted to master, but I’ve never managed to actually make a dish that was decent and presentable. Until now!

And just in time for Lent! Now I have something I can cook on Fridays!

Made it another lap around the star

Today marks my 36th birthday!

Huzzah!

That forehead just getting bigger and bigger.

Somehow, this insane Louisianan managed to survive to 36 years. So, what to do on your birthday when you’re a grown-ass adult?

Whatever you want! It’s just that you’ll find yourself wanting to get chores done so you don’t have to think about it later. Also, cook breakfast.

If only I was better at baking; biscuits would have been a nice touch.

I should probably set up a “Cooking” category if I’m going to keep posting my dishes. I do love to cook, and today was a special challenge: scrambling and frying eggs on the griddle. They turned out all right, though there were a few moments of panic when the eggs started spreading to cover the whole damn griddle. But given time, I’ll learn. Having Casey next to me to eat the failures is its own reward.

His name is Casey and he is here for your bacon.

Beyond the cooking and chores, what else is there to do on my birthday? Why yes, writing, of course!

Nerds gotta nerd, bruh.

I would say that I’ve become a fairly boring person over time, but to be honest I would’ve called this a birthday well spent back in my teenage years. If there’s celebratory alcohol to be had, it’ll be a 6-pack of Guinness or a short glass of whiskey.

In the meantime, I have an arc to plot and a story to write. Happy reading, folks!
